Botulin purified proteins, also referred to as neurotoxins, are injected into a specific muscle to prevent the ability for the muscle to contract, therefore preventing the wrinkling of the skin around and over it. There are four FDA approved medications including Botox, Xeomin, Dysport, and Jeuveau. The most common sites injected include the forehead lines, frown lines, and crow's feet. Although other areas such as chin, neck, cheeks can also be injected to give you the smooth skin you are looking for.
All FDA approved medications work the same way, but each brand has a slightly different formula. The effects are only temporary. While some people may see results for up to six months, the medications are usually only effective for about three months. This means repeated injections are needed in order to see the continued effects. However, injections do not need to be continued once started. The medication will just gradually wear off and previous wrinkles will slowly return.
Botox is sometimes called a "preventative anti-aging" treatment because it primarily treats dynamic lines and wrinkles of expression rather than wrinkles that are caused by loss of collagen and elastin. The lines and wrinkles most commonly treated are lines from smiling, frowning, squinting, and raising the eyebrows.
